The National Service Scheme launched in the University in the year 1976 with a meager strength has grown into a massive organization with 360 units spread in Post Graduation, Under Graduation, Professional and Junior Colleges by 2014. It has been active ever since its inception in matters of social and community service and rural reconstruction activities and won laurels from all quarters. A perusal of various programmes organized by the Kakatiya NSS during these years would enable to understand how the changing concept and function of education from mere dissemination of the theoretical knowledge to the assumption of responsibilities for socio-economic development of the society has sensitized the members of the University Community as to the realities around the campus. We place on record that the Principals, Programme Officers and the Volunteers spread in the three districts of North Telangana have been there at the very root of the success of the Kakatiya NSS. It is these functionaries who helped the Kakatiya NSS Unit was awarded the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Award Eleven (11) times by Government of India, State Level Award Fourteen (14) times by Government of Andhra Pradesh for its meritorious services and an International award the President’s Volunteer Service Award by National Community Service USA for Outstanding Commendable Services of NSS. The Volunteers are actively participating in constructive and productive community programmes, various Awareness Drives, Shramadan, Social reforms, Communal Harmony, Creation of Community Assets, Relief Work, Blood Donation, Environmental Protection, Literacy Programmes, Health Education Campaign, Sapling Plantation, Skill Development Training Programme and Public Health Issues and a unique Workshop on Teenage Temptations, Tension and Stress free- examinations and Self Defense Training to Girl Volunteers etc. The NSS, Kakatiya University has become inseparable part of the social life in the three Districts of North Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.
NSS Cell Kakatiya University has received Gold Medal and Merit Certificate from Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh for highest number of volunteer Blood Donation for the year 2012-2013.
Dr. B. Suresh Lal Programme Coordinator, NSS, Warangal has received an International award The President’s Call to Service Award by National Community Service of USA and received A Congratulatory Letter from the President of the United States of America, Mr. Barack Obama for Outstanding Commendable Services of NSS and contribution of more than 4000 hrs service from 1984 to 2013 as a Volunteer, Programme Officer and Programme cCordinator.
NSS Cell Kakatiya has organized Mega Camp with 500 volunteers at Medaram Jatara a State Tribal Festival in February, 2014.
NSS Cell Kakatiya has organized State Level Programme Coordinator’s Meet at Kakatiya University, Warangal on 15th April, 2014.
During 2002-2003 Community Service rendered by the NSS volunteers has covered several aspects like adoption of villages for development work, carrying out the medico-social surveys, setting up of medical centres, programmes of mass immunization, sanitation drives, adult education programmes, blood donation, helping patients in hospitals, helping inmates of orphanages and the physically handicapped etc.
The major achievement of NSS Unit, KU is the Dr. Manohara Chary, NSS Programme, Karimnagar got prestigious Indira Gandhi National NSS Award sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India, New Delhi, which is a higher honour conferred to an NSS Officer given in recognition of their services.
During 2003-2004 2000 NSS volunteers and 20 NSS Programme Officers have participated in the Mega holy event 'Godavari Pushkaralu'. In another holy event, 'Medaram Jatha', 2000
NSS volunteers have participated. 6,11,640 saplings were planted during special campaign programme, Vanamahotsava week.
Activities during 2005-2006
NSS has organized mass rallies in connection with Aasha campaign at Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts in the month of July, 2005 involving 20,000 volunteers and non-volunteers in each district involving individuals in public life.
NSS, KU was identified as one of the best universities in the State for playing active role in propagating the dangers of AIDS through rallies, symposia, etc.
Activities during 2006-2007
1) Organized Inter-Collegiate Mega work camp on the campus from 10-19 August, 2006 in connection with the 30th University Formation Day with 150 volunteers of Warangal District and laid an internal road from University College of Education to SDLCE.
2) Participation of four (4) volunteers in Republic Day Parade Camp at New Delhi.
3) Organized Inter collegiate Youth Leadership Training Camps at Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts involving 100 volunteers in each camp.
4) Volunteers of the NSS, KU has donated blood voluntarily and the NSS Cell is providing the addresses of the volunteers of even the rare groups of blood to the needy round the clock.
5)Prof. A. Seetaram has received Best Programme Co-ordinator award (APSACS-AASHA) from Sri K. Roshaiah garu, Hon'ble Minister for Medical & Health, Govt. of A.P.
6) Organized Mega Work Camp at Mahabubabad Mandal to assert total awareness on HIV/AIDS with 300 volunteers drawn from four districts of KU jurisdiction which is a unique programme in January 2007.
7) Organized Anti Ragging Rally on September 12, 2006.
8)Conducted (Eight) 8 district level NSS Youth Festivals during 2006.
