Established in 1967, it offers courses such as Five Years Integrated M.Sc.course in Chemistry in M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Sc (Chemistry) with specializations in organic, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. In addition to these, the department offers Ph.D programme besides Ph.D. programme. Now 12 affiliated colleges and two constituent colleges are offering M.Sc. Chemistry course in the University jurisdiction.

At present it has projects worth Rs.70 lakhs under various schemes. The major thrust areas of research are 1) Natural Products, 2) Synthesis and Biological Activity, 3) Synthesis of Homo and Copolymers, 4) Coordinator Compounds and Organ Metallic Compounds, and 5) QSAR Analysis. The department is well-equipped with advanced research facilities like JEO 60 MHz, FT NMR spectrometer. It has collaboration with laboratories like DR.Reddy's Labs and IICT.

A good number of teachers were selected for prestigious fellowships sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, UGC, Indo- French Cultural Exchange Fellowships, DAAD Fellowships and Commonwealth Fellowship. Five teachers were selected for post doctoral research fellowships for doing research in the USA, the UK and Germany. The faculty members had taken taken up Major /Minor Research Projects of Rs. 40.00 lakhs and the Department of Science & Technology sanctioned funds under FIST programme (Rs. 38.00 lakhs). It has entered into MoU with Dr. Reddy's Labs with regard to academic and research programmes. The teachers of the department are maintaining research contacts with universities and labs of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Central Drug Research Laboratory, Lucknow, Institute fur Anorganishe und Analytische Chemie, Technnische, Universitat Berlin, Germany, and Institute fur Anarganische chemie Universitat Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany.
