Kakatiya University was established in the year 1976. The Department of Geology was started in the year 1989 the U.G.C. permitted Postgraduate Course i.e.,M.Sc.Geology with an intake of 12 Students later enhanced to 30 seats.

The Department of Geology has been striving hard to impart quality education and training the students mainly in the field of Hydrogeology, Economic Geology, Environmental Geology, Remote Sensing, GIS and Petrology. Research out put in the field of Petrology and Geochemistry is considerable from the Department. Impressive work has also been done in the fields of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology.

In the last few years the Department of Geology had phenomenal development and growth as distinctive scientific and technical center for Academic Excellence, in relation to regional and National requirements. The Department was in the forefront to produce highly skilled human resource which is catering to the needs of varied Govt. organizations and national and multinational companies.

The Department has initiated Collaborative programmes in research with both state and central Government Organizations and is equally active in consultancy of Ground Water prospecting and quality evaluation.

The Department has Good Infrastructural and excellent Academic facilities and has links with reputed Universities and Government Institutions such as Geological Survey of India, Atomic mineral directorate, Andhra Pradesh Mines and Geology, National Remote Sensing Agency, Central Groundwater Board NGRI, NMDC, ONGC, SCCL, etc.

Today the Department is making Foray into the newer areas of Academic enclaves such as Remote Sensing and GIS in tune with changing time and need of the Industry. Besides established disciplines such as Hydrogeology, Mining Geology, Petroleum Geology, Economic Geology, the Department is initiating steps to introduce new programs of study.

Our faculty has excellent teachers, we take pride in the level of our interaction with students which guarantee their success. We designed our Master program to cater to the changing needs of industry, our courses have advanced topics to meet the needs and desire of the students. The requirement of students and Industry will always dictate the focus of our program.

GRADUATE LEVEL

Geology is taught at B.Sc.as one of the optional of the three-year degree course. The subject is offered in combination with (Geology, Botany, Chemistry, and Geology, Mathematics, Physics, and a new combination is Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics. The new syllabus prescribed by the APSCHE is being offered to the students.

POST-GRADUATE LEVEL

The Department offers a master program, M.Sc. in Geology with semester pattern comprising of four semesters in two years. The internal assessment exams were introduced with a view to continuously engage them in learning process and instill quest for knowledge.

Our masters program provides the opportunity to develop an in depth knowledge and experience in sub disciplines of Geological Sciences. The degree will provide a strong competitive advantage for entry into Geological work force. The masters degree also makes an excellent spring board towards a Ph.D degree especially for students who aim to get entry into a top notch Ph.D. program.

RESEARCH PROGRAM

PhD program is offered to the students in the disciplines of Hydrogeology, Petrology, Environmental Geology, Remote Sensing, Economic Geology, etc.

LAB FACILITIES

The Department provides various lab facilities for the practical and as well as research purpose, which not only helps in the smooth functioning of the academic activities but also provide the budding geologists with the expertise guidance and the latest laboratory facilities for the technical knowledge, skills and development of professional traits.

HYDROGEOLOGY AND GEO-CHEMISTRY LAB

The Department has a Geological laboratory for major analysis of water samples. Our analytical instruments include Spectrophotometer, flame-DO, EC, TDS, Fluoride meters, Resistivity meter etc.

OPTICAL LABORATORY

The Optical lab is equipped with German make leica high precision monocular and binocular polarizing microscopes used for mineralogical and petrological studies.

The lab also includes German make leica advanced research Ore microscope used for the study of Ore minerals.

MUSEUM

The Departmental Museum has good collection of  minerals, Ore Minerals, Industrial Minerals, Igneous Rocks, Metamorphic Rocks, Sedimentary Rocks, Fossils, Crystal Models, Structural Models, etc.

In addition the Department houses thin section polishing unit and sieve shaker for Mechanical analysis.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are an integral part of the Earth Science. There is no substitute for getting out into the field and observing the minerals, rocks and Structures. We give students a wide range of field experience by taking them to varied geological terrains.

LIBRARY

There is a good collection of books in main library and Department Library.
